YEAR 8 CHALLENGES

      PROTEST SONG CHALLENGES

1. Select a protest song and add another verse.

2. Select a protest song and change the subject e.g. a war song may become a poverty song. Try to maintain the original rhythm of each line and some original words so that the source is recognisable. Present the two songs side by side so that they are comparable.

3. Research the musical career of one male and one female singer/ song writer of protest songs. (Use the resource section above to help you!)

(a) Do either get involved in a protest or do they just sing about it? Explain in about 1/2 page using examples.

(b) Look at their life experiences. Do they protest because of personal experiences? Explain in about 1/2 page using examples.

4. Look ahead to about the middle of the 21st century. Write a protest song about some social or political issue of the day!

Submit Separately (not online here at Moodle. In some cases you may like to use your own blog. For details of this, see the link to Teen Waves on the sidebar. )

1. Design a cover for a small book of protest song lyrics. Include selective words from the songs in your design.

2. Take a photo of some part of the world around you. Write a protest haiku and overlay the photo with it. There must be some connection between your photo and the words in the haiku. Your own blog would be a great place to do this, otherwise think about another way!

N.B. A haiku is a 3 line poem with 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second and 5 in the third. The first line is usually a descriptive thought; the second line details/explains that thought while the 3rd line tends to be a little philosophical! If you have a blog, this will be easy!

3. SUPER CHALLENGE!
Find a painting (or graffitti) or sculpture that represents a protest
(a) In about 1/2 page explain and describe the protest in the artwork. (Include the name + artist)
(b) Write a protest song to complement the artwork (+ name the song)

NOTE: Again, this would be best done on your blog so that the original artwork can be displayed! Always identify the source!
